Take a deep breath and let’s plan your strategy!  Your room probably didn’t get messy, dirty, or cluttered in a day, so don’t expect it to instantly become perfect.  There are actually techniques involved when trying to declutter, and organize a room.

If your room is large, mentally section it off into smaller areas, such as the bookcase area or the TV area, etc.  Focus only on that small area first so that you can make a dent in it and see some progress quickly.  Even a little bit of progress makes you feel like you have accomplished something and then you are ready to tackle the next area.

I like to get out plastic bins and place them in the middle of the room and have them labeled.  The first I label, “Give Away”.  The second I label, “Put Away”, (meaning out of view).  The third I label, “Throw Away”, and sometimes I just get a big garbage can and skip the bin for this group of stuff.  The fourth group is things I need to keep, but don’t belong in that particular room.  The last group is the things I want to keep in that room, but just need to find the right spot for, after I have cleaned that area, i.e. dusted and vacuumed, etc.

These are just a few tips I use when I need to declutter my room.  I also use these same techniques when I am organizing, cleaning, and decluttering my garage and/or office.

How do you begin decluttering your residence! You can confess your difficulty. Instead of getting to work, you’re here on the web searching for help! Before we get to any solid ideas or tips on the best way to start decluttering your residence, however, you have to have the right mind-set about the challenge ahead. My five steps in how to declutter the house.

1. Clearly define your objective. What would your home ideally appear like? What are you prepared to give up to complete this objective? Why do you desire a de-cluttered residence?

2. Be positive. Remind yourself of all those ancient sayings that are cliche but factual: “The only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time” and “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Do NOT say to yourself that you are too far behind to initiate anything, or that the project is too big for you.

3. Ask yourself why you’re holding onto stuff. Emotional attachment? Thrifty nature? Feel bad? If you can uncover (even vaguely) what it is that keeps you from getting rid of mess, you will be better able to confront those issues head on and notice if they are actually valid.

4. Examine what stops you from placing things away right away. Distractions? Lazy? No easily-accessible place for letters to be filed once you open it? Lack of adequate shelving,  storage containers or cabinets?

5. Judge your strengths. Determine what method and/or plan of attack may best suit you. Does it make you happy crossing completed tasks of your to-do list? Do you consider you might enjoy a timed approach where you dedicate a specific amount of time to organization and de-cluttering each day? Or would you be intrigued by the idea of having a “De-clutter My house” weekend where you allow no interruptions and get as much done as possible in one extended stretch?

Once you have thought these through, congratulations! you’re one step closer to getting your house clutter-free! Mentally you are ready for a huge challenge! Now that you are ready to start searching for practical tips on a way to initiate decluttering your residence!

One way you can do this is to sell items that you do not need any more and get some cash. Think about the extra things that you have in your house or in your office and that you are not using. There are several ways you can sell your stuff and turn your things into cash. Think about selling the items online or you can also organize a yard sale. Why not organize a big yard sale where you can sell your things and invite your neighbors and friends to come and sell their things too. This way there will be a bigger variety for the buyers and everybody will be happy.

If you are not in need of extra cash you can donate some of your things. Chances are you will get a tax break on your donations. Once you organize the clutter you will realize the value of all the things that have been taking up space in your house. Organizing will also help you to have less of the same things. Most of us buy double items because we do not know where the first one is. When everything has its own place you have more space in your home and …. you save money!

When your things are organized and properly stored they will last longer. You don’t have to buy the same things over and over again. Storing your stuff in sealed plastic containers and other special storage (depending on the kind of things you are organizing in them) will help you save money, because they won’t get damaged.

Having your papers organized will also help you save money. Think about the late fees you had to pay, because you forgot to open the mail. You can prevent this by having a well organized space where you open your mail, sort and file your papers.

Things You’ll Need:

dishwashing soap
sponge trash can
a small box of baking soda
about an hour of time

Step 1: Empty the whole refrigerator

I know it sounds like a pain. But, might as well clean it out while you’re at it. Take everything out and, and wipe the inside of your refrigerator with a soapy sponge. Open up your brand new box of baking soda and put it on a shelf somewhere in the back of the refrigerator. The baking soda will absorb odors and keep your refrigerator smelling fresh.

Step 2: Toss out the old and expired food

If it’s wilted, smelly, fuzzy or expired it needs to go in the trash. This is your refrigerator, you don’t want it to turn into a science experiment. It’s a great feeling to know there are no nasty surprises hiding in your Tupperware.

Step 3: Group your food items by type If you group all your food items by type outside before you put them back in your refrigerator, you can get a better idea of the kind of space you need inside to accommodate your items.

Step 4: Adjust your shelves

All your food is laying out grouped by type. Now you can see what items are taller or shorter and adjust your shelves accordingly. The top shelve should probably be left the tallest, to accommodate large pitchers and bottles.

If you have a lot of canned drinks or large liter bottles of soda, you can look into getting special wire racks that either sit on the shelf or hang underneath the shelf to free up more space (there are many of these declutter house gadgets now on the market, so keep your eyes pealed at discount stores.) Allow at least one long shelf that reaches across the whole refrigerator for cakes and large baking sheets.

Step 5: Return food to the refrigerator in groups

Put all your sandwich making or deli items in one drawer. Put your butter and cream cheese items in the butter compartment (sometimes on the door). Put fruits in one bin, put vegetables in another (these are usually on the bottom.) Bottled items can go on the door, just make sure they are grouped by type; jellies together, salad dressings together, sauces together and so on.Designate certain areas for foods that have been cooked and only need to be reheated, an area for meats (beef, seafood, poultry), and another for dairy products.

Step 6: Maintain, repeat and expand

As beautiful as your fridge looks now, it will only be functional if you maintain what you’ve done by cleaning out the fridge once a week (tossing out old food and wiping it down.) This weekly habit will keep your refrigerator looking organized and clean throughout the week. Remember to put items back in their correct grouping.

First, to organize home office space, you need to start by eliminating all those piles of papers. It’s really easy to let things just pile up over time, I know, I’m guilty of it too, and before you know it you barely have room to work.

You can either devote a major block of time to eliminate the paper piles, or break it down into manageable chunks of time. If you decide to break it down, take just a few minutes everyday and those piles will be gone in no time. Fifteen minutes a day to work on those piles is all you need, and before you know it, they’ll be gone.

Toss / File / or Act on Those Papers

Home office organization will be a breeze if you toss, file, or act on those papers immediately.

Use this strategy to tackle the paper piles and then any paper that enters your office after you get it organized. So, when you start to organize your home office and you’re working through the mounds of paperwork, look at each one and decide… toss, file, or act on it then and there.

Once you get the piles of papers under control, keep them under control!

As the mail comes in ask yourself if it’s something you really need. If not, throw it away. But, if you need to keep papers, then start a good filing system for home office organization to keep everything organized and easily accessible. If the piece of paper requires action like a phone call before filing or tossing, then act on it right away and don’t let it sit.

Keep Items You Use Frequently Organized and Within Close Reach

To organize the desk in your home office, you will want to think about what you use on a daily basis and keep it within close reach. Items like pens, pencils, the phone, computer, note pads, etc. usually get used constantly. So, organize whatever you need to grab often and keep this stuff on your desk.

Warning, don’t keep too much stuff on your desk, or you won’t have room to move and work.

For other items you don’t use as frequently like paper clips, markers, extra pens, etc., keep categorized and organized in your desk drawers. Just make sure you keep these things where you can reach them quickly so you don’t have to dig around messing everything up to find them.

Avoid Keeping Extra Supplies in the Desk

Do not store extra supplies in your desk. Organize extra supplies on shelving mounted to the wall or book cases. Better yet, hide those supplies in a cabinet so you can close the doors.

I use a really neat Asian style television cabinet that I installed shelves in to store all my extra home office supplies.

Keep Your Business Separate from Your Home

When you work at home, it’s really easy to let other things creep into the office… your kid’s schoolwork, personal bills, personal mail, etc. Just remember the purpose of your home office and organize it accordingly. Your office is for work stuff and your home is for living, so keep them separate and you won’t risk getting distracted.

Maintain Office Organization

If you want to keep your office well organized, then one important home office organization tip is to maintain it. You can’t expect to organize it once and then have it stay looking great. You’ll have to work organizing into your daily routine.

Keep it simple. Each day you should spend about 10 minutes keeping the office space well organized. Go through the mail and toss, file, or act on it. Throw away things you don’t need at the end of the day and reorganize your desk before you quit working.

Write out a “To Do list” at the end of each day. When you walk into your office the next morning, you’ll have a handy reminder list of things to work on.

Garage organizing is a project that no one gets excited about. And when you think about garage organizing, the thought of an expensive garage organizational system often comes to mind. 3. Check out FreeCycle.org and Craigslist.com for ideas and cheap or free garage organizing supplies. You can get free stuff from FreeCycle.org and cheap or free stuff from Craigslist.com. You might need to check often in order to get what you need. It is a good idea to have a clear idea of what you are looking for before you look at these sites. It is easier to search for an item than to just browse around.

4. Go to garage sales to find cheap garage organizing supplies. Unlike with thrift stores or the websites I mentioned, it is better to go to garage sales with an open mind rather than a list. Be open to thinking about how you can use what you find at garage sales for your organizing project.

5. Look around your house for old or unused furniture and organizing supplies. Before you throw out that old bookcase or table, think about how you can use it for your garage organizing project. Old bookcases make great shelving units in the garage. Old tables can provide a great workspace. Think about how you can use something to help you organize your garage before you toss it out.
